Not that there is any need to add to the intrigue of this mans life. You might wonder how he came to his creations in Jewelry from his career as an Airline Pilot. Well, in W.W.II Joe was part of the Air Transport Command flying C-54s in and around Cairo, Egypt. Working in the Shepherds Hotel in Cairo was a White Russian silversmith named Bakhar. Bakhar would pilfer pieces of silver from here and there, melt them down, and make puzzle rings which he kept in a cigar box and sold to interested parties. Joe bought one. It was shortly after, in 1945, that Joe was lent by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the late King Ibn Saudi of Saudi Arabia as the pilot of a Boeing DC-3. The DC-3 was a gift from Roosevelt, the first of the Saudi Airlines fleet. What ensued was what Joe refers to as a wild two years with the offer of several wives and a plentiful supply of gold to stay. Joe chose to go back to the United States. It wasnt until his return in 1947 that he decided to try and make one of Bakhars rings. Setting up shop on the window sill of his apartment in Kansas City, José as he is now known, taught himself to make the renowned rings.
