It all started over a cup of coffee in November 1999. Six people from the opal industry, business and technology sectors met in Lightning Ridge, Australia, to discuss whether e-commerce would help the opal industry. We found that consumers were paying too much for opal, that they had little in the way of choice, and to top it all off, miners were receiving an unjustifiably small slice of the retail price. We knew the Internet could change all of that. We had a simple goal: to give consumers access to thousands of value-for-money opals, and to share a greater proportion of the retail price with miners. A classic win-win situation. Eopal Limited was then formed, and in July 2000 our first full-time staff joined us. Over the following months we worked with our opal suppliers to develop a prototype web site, and devise photography methods that could reliably show what each opal looked like.
